Dr. Jennifer Rice and Dr. James Rice at Nellysford Dental are pleased to offer periodontal treatment for our patients in Nellysford, Virginia and the surrounding areas who suffer from gum disease. As you know, a healthy smile isn’t just about beautiful teeth but also about the healthy gums which support those pearly whites.

If left untreated, gingivitis–the early stage of gum disease–can advance into periodontitis. While gingivitis is easy to treat and often reversible, advanced gum disease is not as easily resolved. So how does gum disease take hold?

Daily brushing and flossing is designed to remove food particles and oral debris, including bacterial plaque from your mouth. Once plaque spreads below the gum line, the bacteria releases toxins which irritate your gum tissue. Your body responds with inflammation, and this causes the gum tissue and bones that normally support your teeth to begin breaking down.

As this degeneration continues, your gum tissue begins receding–or pulling back–from your teeth, causing pockets to form between your teeth and gums. Over time, without treatment, this gum recession will cause the bone to deteriorate and your teeth to become loose and fall out.

Depending on the severity of the condition, Dr. Jennifer Rice and Dr. James Rice may recommend more frequent professional dental cleanings, improving your at-home oral hygiene, using antibiotics to treat the infection, having scaling and root planing performed in the office, or even gum surgery.

At Nellysford Dental, we believe that no matter what the cause of your gum disease–whether from diabetes, genetics, stress, poor diet, or hormonal fluctuations–the key is intervention and early treatment.

To ensure your oral health, develop healthy habits and see our team regularly for protection against gum disease. Together we will keep your mouth healthy for a lifetime of smiles! Please call 434-218-7020 if you have any concerns or to schedule your next visit.
