At Rice Dentistry of Nellysford, Drs. Jennifer and James Rice have been helping families of all ages take care of their smiles for many years in the Nellysford, Virginia, area. During this time, we have helped many patients straighten their smiles with the Invisalign® system.
This discreet smile straightening system works using clear aligners instead of the wires and brackets traditionally used with braces. With Invisalign, clear plastic aligner trays are worn for 20-22 hours each day, which gently shift the teeth into their desired position. Let’s take a look at some commonly asked questions about how to care for your smile during your Invisalign treatment.
How do I clean my teeth while wearing Invisalign aligners?
Cleaning your teeth is easy with Invisalign! Because there are no brackets and wires to clean, you simply remove the aligners to clean your teeth. Brushing and flossing are just a matter of doing them as usual.
How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?
You just remove them from your mouth and brush and rinse in warm water (not hot, you don’t want to warp the plastic material). You can also clean them using an Invisalign cleaning kit. Your choice!
How will eating affect my aligners?
It doesn’t because you take them out when you eat. Not only does this mean that you can still eat all of your favorite foods, it means you don’t have to worry about food particles getting trapped in between brackets and wires.
What about sports? How does wearing aligners affect my sports activities?
The best thing about wearing aligners during contact sports is that the plastic will never cut your mouth. But let’s say you need to wear a protective mouthguard during your participation, if that is the case, you can remove the aligners while wearing your mouthguard. Just be sure to put them back in as soon as possible afterward.
How does Invisalign affect my bedtime routine?
Bedtime oral hygiene is the same as when you clean your teeth after eating. Simply brush and floss your teeth as usual, and your aligners as you would after eating. No trying to brush and floss between metal or ceramic brackets or wires.
